BRADENTON, Fla. - The state championships for cross country are Friday in Estero, and Canaan Meester-Kitterman will be the lone state qualifier from Manatee County.
Meester-Kitterman qualified in the Top-15 to make it to states. He was 8th in the regional meet last week, and headed south for Estero on Thursday. "He's very, very competitive, so coming in first is a priority. A lot of kids are okay with coming in 5th, 6th or 7th, but he always wants to be the first person," says Bayshore High cross country coach David Stubbs.
He became a runner by chance in middle school, and now he has a shot at a state title. "I showed up one day at middle school and said ‘I want to run.’ So I just ran. I love the sport. It's what I do; it’s awesome," says Meester-Kitterman.
Like a racehorse chomping at the bit, Canaan loves the rush that competitive running gives him. "As you start, your heart starts pumping and you start getting the shakes a little bit. And then once the gun fires, everything just stops – it’s you, and you’re running. That's all it is and it’s one of the coolest feelings ever."
Congratulations to Canaan Meester-Kitterman of Bayshore High School. He is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
