BRADENTON – this week’s ABC 7 Athlete of the Week recently became a state champion in weightlifting. But he uses his super-human strength in other endeavors as well.

Southeast Seminole Gage Takacs recently won the state title in boys weightlifting in the 199 lb. classification.

"He is constantly studying videos of other lifters. What he eats, his training methods, everything is tfor full muscular development and full strength development," says Southeast weightlifting coach KJ Dunlap.

The fact that he won the title is newsworthy enough, but he had to lift all that weight just three months removed from right knee surgery to repair an ACL tear. “I knew right from the day I got out of surgery that I wanted to be ready for weightlifting season, because I didn't want it to take away from my weightlifting season. The rehab exercises helped me get back into shape for it," says Takacs.

The ACL tear came while he was wrestling for the Seminoles. In addition to the fact that he wrestles and weightlifts to great success, he is a world champion in jiu-jitsu.

“He had had another injury before that. He had the other knee scoped. He is just genetically gifted,” says Dunlap.

Takacs is a junior, so he has another year to get that wrestling state championship, and defend the weightlifting one. "It’s just my perseverance, my determination to come here and work hard every day. Even the day after states I was in here working out. I just love doing it."

Congratulations to Gage Takacs of Southeast High School. He is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
