BRADENTON - The Braden River Pirates have won their last 5 games by shutout. Pitcher Courtney Mirabella has been right in the thick of things and, for that she is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.

The Pirates beat the Manatee Hurricanes the other night 10-0, and Mirabella struck out 12 on the mound, and had 4 RBI at the plate -- a complete game in more ways than one. "Courtney by far leads the team with her composure. When the pressure is on she will come through. She enjoys it, she wants it, she wants to be in high pressure situations, and just to basically dominate. And that is what she has been doing," says Pirates head coach Erin Spivey.

Last Friday night she beat her nemesis, the Lakewood Ranch Mustangs, whom she hadn't beaten at all in her high school career. Of course it was a shutout, and she struck out 14; quite a week for her and her team. "I just love having the ball in my hands. That’s the main reason I love being pitcher is you’re in every play. And it’s really fun to be out there with all your friends, but knowing you’re in control the game, how you want it to be."

The Pirates are 5-0 in the district on the heels of just missing the state finals in Mirabella's sophomore season, and then she struck out 241 last season. She will play for North Carolina State next season. "The girls up there were all like a giant family, and they were all really close. And that really appealed to me. And I love ACC basketball."

"She is confident in her pitching. She has a bag full of tricks on the mound. She throws several pitches and she is confident in every one of them. That's what makes her a huge asset on the mound," says Spivey.

Congratulations to Courtney Mirabella of Braden River High School. She is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
