SARASOTA - In baseball circles, it is said that when a hitter is on a hot streak, the baseball appears to be the size of a beach ball. Booker High's Albert de los Santos had one of those weeks last week.

Life was a beach for Albert last week in high school baseball action. In fact, de los Santos has been seeing beach balls all season long as he is hitting .512.

"He's fast, he's got strength, he hits the ball to the other side of the field with power…it’s just that natural talent that you can't teach. He just has it," says head coach Jeremy Schmidt.

A good baseball batter gets a hit about every 3 at-bats, so with Albert hitting .512, he is getting a hit in less than every 2 at-bats. And last week he hit .667, which means he had 2 hits in every 3 at-bats to go with 5 RBI and 8 runs scored. "My father, he taught me how to hit very good. And when he was playing, he was a pretty good hitter himself. I picked it up from him, I guess."

Booker is 8-12 this season. They are a work in progress under new coach Jeremy Schmidt, and de los Santos is one of the reasons they are moving in the right direction. “The game comes easy to him. Sometimes it looks like he’s doing it effortless out there," says Coach Schmidt.

"If I had to say, it was like 4 years old…picked up my first baseball bat and spongeball and started swinging the bat. When I was little I used to think all the time about being a professional baseball athlete," says de los Santos

"He is in the VPA program at Booker High School. He also plays the violin and the piano, so he is multi-talented," says Schmidt.

Congratulations to Albert de los Santos of Booker High School, he is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
