BRADENTON - DeAngela Mathis of Southeast High School recently won her 2nd straight MVP award of the Willie Clemons Classic. The fact she did it for the 8th-ranked team in the state makes it even more impressive. She is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.

In Southeast's annual holiday tournament named after Willie Clemons, she averaged 15 points and 8 rebounds as Southeast won it for the 2nd year in a row.

Long-time ‘Noles girls coach John Harder loves to coach her. “DeAngela is so coachable, because she wants to excel. She grew up thinking Division 1, and when you have somebody that wants to live the dream, she’ll come to practice every day anticipating that dream,” says Coach Harder.

For the season, the ‘Noles are one of the top teams in the state's 5A class. Mathis is averaging 17 points, 8 rebounds, 2 steals and 2 assists per game, helping the ‘Noles to an 18-3 record. “I always have a goal, for every game, to work on…you know, defense, offense, take better shot selections, different things like that,” says Mathis.

On January 9th, Mathis scored the 1,000th point of her career. And she is just a junior. She has so much more to accomplish before she graduates. “I saw her come in as a 9th grader, and I knew I had a gift, a real prodigy. And it’s just blossomed. We are very, very proud of her,” says Coach Harder.

Congratulations to DeAngela Mathis of Southeast High School. She is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
