SARASOTA – The Cardinal Mooney boys basketball team is having a phenomenal season. They are 21-2 because they work as a team. One member of that team is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
The Cougars suffered a tough loss in overtime Monday night to Sarasota Christian, but Antonio Blakeney had 33 points for Mooney in the game, and he is a big reason they have won 21 games. “It's great to coach a guy with his talent level. He makes my job a little bit easier in terms of coming up with sets and things to do, because he is such a talented kid,” says Cougars head coach Stefan Gates.
Just a sophomore, the 6'5'' Blakeney has been filling up the bucket all season long. He is averaging 25 points a game, and he also is hauling in over 8 rebounds every night. “It feels good, feels really good. I have a lot to work for. All the stuff looking ahead, I know I'm working to go to Lakeland for the final four that this school hasn't done yet.”
As the Cougars get closer to playoff time, they know that Blakeney -- and good team play -- will determine how far they can go in the post-season. “He can score from the perimeter, he can hurt you going to the basket, he can hurt you on the offensive rebounding end, and that's his desire to be good and to win, and do what he can to help his team win,” says Coack Gates.
Congratulations to Antonio Blakeney of Cardinal Mooney High School. He is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
