BRADENTON, Fla. - Matthew Jones finished his career leading the Saint Stephen's School boys soccer team to their 2nd final four appearance in 4 years. And for that, he is our ABC 7 high school Athlete of the Week.
The Falcons were expected to be in a rebuilding season this year, but thanks to 28 goals from Jones, St. Stephen's made it to the state's final four for the 3rd time in school history. "Predominantly, he's got very good feet. Technically he's very clean, and he has very good vision. He is good at bringing other players into the game. He is kind of the engine that drives the team,” says Falcons head coach Marc Jones.
The Falcons ended the soccer season 14-2-1, not bad for a down year. ”It was a big change because all of a sudden I was one of the leaders on the team. I felt like it was my responsibility to push this team onto a big season. I am thrilled with the performance that every player put out there," says Matthew.
Jones is in his senior year at St. Stephen's. He has gone there since kindergarten, and played for his father on the soccer team since 7th grade. He wouldn't change that for the world. "It’s been great, really. We have really forged a bond over the years because he has been my dad, he's been my teacher, and he's been my coach. He has taught me some great life lessons. I really appreciate having him out here."
"He's just a great kid in general. He's a strong student. He is the head of school list here at St. Stephen's which is not easy to attain. I am very proud because he is able to combine the rigorous academics here at St. Stephen's with the rigorous athletics," says Coach Jones.
Congratulations to Matthew Jones of St. Stephen's Episcopal School. He is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
