VENICE - The Latin term "Tabula Rosa" means clean slate. Carly Rosa and the Venice Indians softball team began this season with a clean slate after a tough season last year, and now Carly is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
The Indians have been to the state finals several times over the past few years, and the man that led them there, Coach Larry Sandburg, is back. For all his success, it is a rare occurrence to see a week like his shortstop Carly had last week. “She was on base four times the other night, and then against Port Charlotte on Tuesday she had a grand slam home run that won the ball game," says Sandburg.
As exceptional as she is on defense, the reason she had such an exceptional week last week is because her hitting shoes are her favorite pair. "I love hitting, all the time. If we could come out here and do a hitting practice all day, I would love it…definitely."
She began playing softball at age 7, and in her house, there is just one position to be considered: shortstop -- because of a certain someone. "My grandpa's a big Derek Jeter fan, all the way…and then my mom was like, 'Carly, you need to do what you need to do.' I was like, okay."
She would love to continue her career into college, and if she keeps it up, that is a possibility. "She brings everything she has. She is full speed all the time, whether it is practice or the game. Anything she does, she does it full speed," says Sandburg.
Congratulations to Carly Rosa of Venice High School. She is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
