NORTH PORT - Edwin Moses might have been the greatest hurdler in U.S. olympic history, but he did not match his track prowess with similar talents on the football field. But our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week did pull off that daily double.

Ro'derick Spears is one of the best hurdlers in the state. He is in the top 5 in the 110-meter hurdles and the top 10 in the 300 hurdles.

"It makes my job easy when you have a person like that. I have watched him for four years now and he has progressed from a raw athlete who has skill, to now a skilled athlete who doesn’t need much fine tuning," says North Port High track coach Tony Miller.

He has won both events in every meet except one this season, and it happened to be the only meet the North Port track and field team lost all season. "If I have it in me, I might as well give it all I've got. I'm not just gonna let someone beat me if I have it in me to beat them. It is the way I was brought up. Just let it all out. Give it all I've got with no regrets."

In the fall, Spears is a standout cornerback and running back for the Bobcats football team. "I love football more. It is more physical. I love racing, I love it out of the blocks. There is a lot of trash talking. I'm for all that. I love either sport. It would be hard to drop one."

Either way he decides to go, track, football or both, his coach believes he has the talent make a difference. “It doesn't matter if it is track or football, he has that edge that most people his age don't have. When it comes to it, if he has to push himself to the level of the competition, he rises to that level."

Congratulations to Ro'derick Spears of North Port High School, he is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
