Athlete of the Week April 3rd - Zach McMullen

SARASOTA, Fla. -- The Sarasota Sailors are back in the mix on baseball's national landscape. They are 15-1, and a big reason for that is their starting centerfielder, who is also the Sailors’ lockdown reliever.

The Sarasota Sailors have worked their way up to #2 in the country, and Zach McMullen, who patrols center field for them, has also become their shutdown guy out of the bullpen.

"Number one, he is a left-handed pitcher. He has tremendous movement on his fastball. He attacks the hitters a little more. He gets ahead in counts. He uses both sides of the plate. He really has become a complete pitcher, and he has really come into his own," says head coach Clyde Metcalf.

Over the course of the season, he has not given up an earned run, and has allowed just 4 hits in 17 innings. "I am pretty confident that all my pitches move to where I can get a lot of outs. I also have a tremendous defense behind me so I am not trying to strike everyone out. That is probably the biggest thing," says McMullen.

In those 17 innings, he also has struck out 34, and walked a grand total of just 2 batters. He gets in done in the classroom, as well.

"I really like to attack hitters. I don't like to pitch around them. That is one of the main things, as well," says McMullen.

“He is averaging two strikeouts an inning. He has walked just 2 batters all season. When he has his really good stuff he is pretty unhittable which his era shows. He has really had a tremendous first half of the year for us," says Coach Metcalf.

Congratulations to Zach McMullen of Sarasota High School. He is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
