MANATEE COUNTY - ABC 7's Football Friday Night began last week, and in a starring role was our first Athlete of the Week for this school year, Chad Rex of Lakewood Ranch High School.

The Lakewood Ranch Mustangs racked up 505 yards of offense and 55 points in their win over Southeast. That is a lot of 5's and there was another: 5 touchdowns by Mustangs quarterback Rex. “I surprised myself. I didn't expect that from me. I was hoping for a good game. I surprised myself, and a lot of other people."

Rex led a balanced ranch attack as he ran for over 100 yards and passed for over 100 as well. "He is a tough kid. He has to be able to run a lot of different things. That is what our offense is based on; he has to make reads on the fly and stuff like that. Our offense is based on him making tough decisions in a hurry," says head coach Shawn Trent.

The Mustangs went 5-5 last season, but with Rex having another year of experience under center, their future is looking bright. "We're working together very good. I think we have a big shot at making the playoffs. I guess people keep doubting us, but we like people doubting us and then surprising people."

Lakewood Ranch plays at Tampa Jesuit this week. Congratulations to Chad Rex of Lakewood Ranch, he is our ABC 7 Athlete of the Week.
