SARASOTA, FLA. – Tourism is a huge industry here on the Suncoast and sports tourism is growing.

“It is one of our targeted industries that we are looking to attract more business development opportunities as well as visitors to our community,” said Jeff Maultsby, the Director of Business and Economic Development for Sarasota County.

Maultsby said the Sarasota County has made major investments into sports tourism citing a few examples like Ed Smith Stadium and the rowing facility near I-75.

“A tremendous amount of assets have been geared towards the attraction of more visitors in the sports realm.”

This week, the Baltimore Orioles are big contributors to sports tourism in Sarasota County. ABC 7’s Todd Dunn is working on a story about the Orioles Fantasy Camp that brought 72 campers to Sarasota to live the Major League Baseball Experience.
