VENICE, FL - Sarasota County Sheriff Tom Knight says crime is down. Saying right now the need for a holding facility in Venice may no longer be cost effective. Right now his agency is spending more than million dollars to staff and maintain the facility located at the Venice Police Department.

Local agencies like the Venice and North Port Police Departments say it's a huge help to them. VPD Chief Tom McNulty says if his officers had to travel to downtown Sarasota each time it would take them off the street for an additional hour.

Coming up this evening on ABC 7 we'll take a look at how many people are being brought tot he facility now compared to five years ago and if it still makes sense to have it.
