SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - A tragic loss for the Sarasota County Fire Department Sunday night.
Battalion Chief Bill Kocur has died in a motorcycle accident in South Georgia, according to family.
Kocur had been missing since he left the family's lake house Wednesday night. After a four-day long search, Kocur's body was recovered Sunday afternoon.
63-year-old Kocur was a lifelong Sarasota resident, and the first baby born at Sarasota Memorial hospital on New Year's Day, 1954.
He is described by his daughter Hally Kocur as a loving father and grandfather "who would give you the shirt off his back, and I have actually seen him do it."
Kocur dedicated over 25 years of his life to fire rescue in both Sarasota and Manatee Counties, and he was set to retire in March 2018.
Investigators in Georgia are still trying to piece together what caused Kocur's accident.
The family, who is still in Georgia, says they plan to have a celebration of life service in his honor, but aren't sure when that may take place.
