HOLLYWOOD, CA. (WWSB) - Variety Magazine says R. Lee Ermey died this morning from complications of pneumonia. The was 74.
He was perhaps best known for his role in the movie "Full Metal Jacket." He played the role of grizzled Marine Corp drill instructor Sergeant Hartman.
His manager tweeted the news Sunday evening, saying "It is with great sadness that I regret to inform you all that R. Lee Ermey (‘The Gunny’) passed away this morning from complications of pneumonia. He will be greatly missed by all of us.”
Ermey had several other roles to his credit. He played Sheriff Hoyt in the 2003 film "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre", he was a police captain in the movie "Se7en", and played the voice of the plastic army men's leader, Sarge, in "Toy Story".
In real life Ermey was a former Marine Corps drill instructor, and had been awarded the honorary rank of Gunnery Sergeant.
