Stench from red tide affecting coastal businesses causing temporary closures

NOKOMIS, FL (WWSB) - The smell of dead and decaying sea life killed by Florida red tide is affecting more than just residents noses; it's also prompting one business to temporarily close their doors.

According to Travis Donmoier, General Manager of Pop's Sunset Grill in Nokomis, the odor from red tide has become too much for staff and customers to tolerate prompting a temporary closure for the bayfront restaurant.

"We've had complaints of coughing, and you know tightness in their chest and some scratchiness," said Donmoier, "I think everybody has it but more it's just the smell that just discourages everybody and if you look at the water it's totally brown it's not the traditional teal color our here for us."

Donmoier says the usual lunch crowd has been cut in half since red tide hit the area weeks ago causing a substantial drop in revenue.

Pop's was closed Wednesday and remained closed Thursday but according to a post on the restaurant's Facebook page, they hope to reopen to the public on Friday starting at 11:00 a.m.
