TAMPA, FL (WWSB) - Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo has a new member to add to their family.
An endangered pygmy hippopotamus was born to mother Zsa Zsa, on December 1, 2017.
Pygmy hippos are incredibly rare and and are smaller than their Nile hippo relative. These hippos tend to live in smaller pods and prefer to live in solitary.
The baby hippo is one of 32 pygmy hippos in a Species Survival Program.
“Pygmy hippos are elusive and extremely rare in the wild with only a few thousand thought to be left in the world,” said Chris Massaro, General Curator at Tampa’s Lowry Park Zoo.
The Zoo is waiting to announce the gender of the hippo with a special reveal.
