MANATEE CO., FL - Rowlett Elementary is on the verge of doing what few other public schools in Florida have done, convert to a charter.

After carful consideration, parents and teachers voted for the conversion in June.  Now, they await a decision on their request from the Manatee County School Board.

If approved, the school will assume the name Rowlett Academy, and would be the first public to charter school conversion in the area.

ABC 7 Reporter John McQuiston is taking a closer look at this unique moment in the district's history.
