NOKOMIS, FL - A nearly 300 acre piece of property set to open to the public will be named the Scherer Thaxton preserve.

It's located off S.R. 681 in Nokomis and will connect to Oscar Scherer State Park and the legacy trail.

Tuesday county commissioners approving the name. Partially after former commissioner Jon Thaxton who worked to save it from development. Officials with the state park like manager Tony Clements say it's an important greenway connecting plants and animals to other set aside lands. "Oscar Scherer State Park is basically the only connection we have left from our inland green preserves to the coast. It's really important that we do what we can to keep these areas available."

Thaxton telling us Wednesday that this is the last generation which even has the option to save these types of green spaces and that comes with a lot of responsibility.

The preserve is expected to be open to the public with trails for walking, riding, and fishing in the spring.
