MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. - Some fear plans that calls for the emplacement of large groins to prevent beach erosion on Longboat Key will ruin one of the area's most iconic spots, Beer Can Island.

The State of Florida has acknowledged they plan to issue a permit for three large groins to be constructed at the north end of the island.

Longboat Key Town Manager Dave Bullock says the solution is to build two concrete groins to stop the erosion. However, former Manatee County Commissioner Joe McClash says there are other options and that the public hasn't been well-informed about the proposed project.  Bullock counters that the public is aware, having voted on a referendum to fund the groin construction project.
