How to keep your lawn healthy this fall

(BPT) - With colder temperatures quickly setting in and the holiday season creeping around the corner, it’s not uncommon to find lawn care at the bottom of your to-do list. However, fall offers a prime opportunity for your lawn to revitalize from summer and prepare for winter, as grass roots are actively absorbing moisture and nutrients it needs for food and energy prior to going dormant.

By taking a proactive approach to fall lawn care, you’ll help prevent damage and disease, and cut down on prep and repair time come spring.

Consider these must-do tips to maintain your lawn this fall and keep it in healthy condition for the long-term:

1. Continue to mow.

Even as the temperatures drop, it’s best to mow your grass a little shorter than normal so it’s not weighed down and damaged by snow during the winter. Mow it until the grass stops actively growing, usually in the beginning of November.

2. Remove leaves and yard debris.

It’s important to remove leaves and yard debris as soon as possible to prevent matted grass. If leaves and debris stay for too long, they’ll form a dense layer that will suffocate the grass and breed fungal diseases. It’s best to use a leaf blower like JET(TM) to move your heaviest leaves easily and efficiently, with power up to 130 mph.

3. Aerate.

To help encourage proper grass growth, aerate to remove small pieces of soil from your lawn, relieving compaction and opening air channels. This allows the soil to breathe, absorb nutrients and establish strong roots.

Since grass roots are still developing under the soil’s surface in the fall, it’s recommended to fertilize the lawn before the season ends. By delivering needed nutrients, the soil will stay healthy and strong, and encourage quicker grass growth in the spring.

5. Eliminate weeds.

Killing off weeds before winter hits is essential for a healthy spring lawn. Weeds are in energy-absorbing mode during fall, so it’s best to kill them off early to prevent germination.
