NORTH PORT, FL - A North Port police officer shoots and kills a man in the line of duty Tuesday night. Now the Sarasota County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

It happened just before 11 Tuesday night near I-75 and Toledo Blade blvd. That's where the officer says he rolled up on a suspicious white minivan parked. Wednesday markings on the side street indicate where the vehicles were sitting.

The unnamed officer says he got out of the car to question the man inside. About a minute later he dispatched back in that shots were fired and the man was hit and needed emergency help. Within minutes back up arrived. The man was pronounced dead about an hour later.

The officer says he saw a gun and that he was threatened by it. The department handing the investigation over to the Sheriff's Office says North Port Police Assistant Chief Anthony Sirianni. "That way it is a non-biased entity conducting the investigation. I believe there was a dashboard cam that was placed into evidence with the Sheriff's Office. Interviews were conducted with the officer."

That video has not been released. Neither has the name of the person shot or even the officer. The officer has been put on leave as the investigation is ongoing. We are told he is also getting the proper support at this time.
