MADRID (AP) — A Spanish judge will open proceedings on whether to extradite to Britain the parents of a 5-year-old boy with a brain tumor they took abroad against doctors' advice.

Ashya King's parents were arrested Sunday in southeastern Spain after a European arrest warrant was issued by Interpol at the request of British police. Their son is receiving medical treatment for a brain tumor.

A spokesman at the National Court in Madrid said the extradition hearing was scheduled to begin at 9.30 a.m. (0830 GMT) Monday, but was delayed because the couple's lawyer had not yet arrived.

The spokesman said judge Ismael Moreno was expected to interview the parents and rule on whether they should go free or be held in jail while the court decides whether to extradite them.
