LAVAL, Quebec (AP) - The mayor of Quebec's third-largest city is stepping down amid a corruption scandal that has already brought down the mayor of Montreal.
Gilles Vaillancourt said Friday he is stepping down after 23 years as mayor of Laval, a suburb of Montreal.
Late Monday, Montreal mayor Gerald Tremblay became the first elected official to resign as a public inquiry hears testimony detailing graft and ties to organized crime in the construction industry.
People living around Montreal have long assumed a fair bit of corruption existed in the city's politics, but only now are they learning the extent of it.
A former construction boss testified Vaillancourt received a kickback on contracts. Vaillancourt denies the allegations but says the damage to his reputation has been done.
