PARIS (AP) - An Algerian military cargo plane has crashed in southern France with six people aboard, according to local police.

The plane went down around 4 p.m. Friday in Trelans, a town 375 miles (605 kilometers) south of Paris, according to local officials.

The fate of the plane's passengers was not immediately known as firefighters fought a blaze at the scene of the crash, the Sipa news agency reported, citing local police.

A parachute was seen in the sky at the time of the crash, according to a witness.

The plane had taken off from Paris and was returning to Algeria.
