MANATEE COUNTY, Fla. -- Firefighters from Station 4 of Manatee jumped into action Wednesday morning when they were notified that baby ducklings were stuck in a storm drain.

Upon arriving at the scene, firefighters found the mother duck pacing frantically around the drain, and could hear the ducklings chirping inside.

The manhole covers on both sides of the road were removed, and Lt. Jeff Lonzo located the two ducklings in a pipe between the road and a retention pond.

After unclogging the pipes, Lt. Lonzo was able to catch one of the ducklings by hand in the manhole, while the other popped out of the cleared discharge pipe and swam to its mother.

The crew was described as “kind, gentle and compassionate with the little ducks.”
