SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) - Several years after the start of the Veterans Treatment Court in the Twelfth Judicial District, dozens of vets have received help getting back on their feet.
"We have retired colonels volunteering their time as mentors. We find the vets relate well to fellow vets," said Judge Brian Iten.
The Veterans Treatment Court began locally several years about but originally began in 2008 in Buffalo, NY.
Judge Iten says sometimes the traumatic stress vets experienced while in the service manifests afterwards in civilian life.
"Being in the service doesn't get you a lenient sentence, but we're recognizing that for a lot of these men and women, their service has--upon occasion--caused them to end up in the criminal justice system," he said.
