BOCA RATON, Fla. (CNN) -- A little Yorkshire-Terrier mix is recovering after an alligator went after the dog on Easter Sunday.
According to Anthony Monti, Lilly's owner, "She got up by the alligator in the grass somewhere and he stared dragging her into the lake. Somehow she got away, he got her again, and that's how she got the bad wounds in the back."
Monti calls that day the worst of his life.
"It's heartbreaking, having a pet is just like having a child and seeing your child suffer it breaks your heart," he said.
The 6-year-old dog was fighting for her life, but doctors say it's a miracle she is even standing.
"It's one of the worse lacerations that I've seen," said Dr. Lindsay Butzner with Clint Moore Animal Hospital.
The little dog has about 50 staples and Dr. Butzner says she is on antibiotics to fight the infection.
"When she got here her whole body was exposed, and her insides were coming out so she knows she was saved," said Butzner.
Monti believes she slipped through railing before the attack.
"It's pretty scary, just about an hour ago there was an alligator just roaming by," he said.
He adds that this accident is a reminder to keep pets leashed near canals.
"I had the wildlife commission come here this morning to show the wounds and he doesn't understand how she survived the attack and how she got away. So we're calling her our Easter miracle baby."
