STUART, Fla. (AP) - A teenage surfer was posing for pictures in the waters off central Florida when a shark bit him.

Cole Taschman needed 12 stitches in his right hand after being bitten Sunday in the waters off Stuart. The high school junior tells The Palm Beach Post (http://bit.ly/XFM3o7 ) that he was in waist-deep waters when a blacktip reef shark bit his hand.

Taschman says he hit the shark with his surfboard and then ran out of the water to get help. He says the shark he saw was between 4 feet and 5 feet long. The 16-year-old had been posing for pictures for a fundraiser for an injured friend.

According to the University of Florida's International Shark Attack File, Florida leads the country in shark attacks.
