Robbery suspect dies after high-speed chase and shootout with police

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL)- One suspect is dead after he was shot by Tallahassee Police.  Police say Tommy Jackson died at a hospital following the shooting. Police say at 1:21 p.m., officers responded to an armed robbery in progress in the area of Gamble Street and Mill Street.

Officers say they chased the vehicle Jackson and Arthur James were in before the car crashed into a tree. Officers then ran after the armed suspects.

Police say an officer shot James in the area of Copeland and Call Street on the campus of Florida State University.  James was taken to the hospital to be treated for his injuries. Police say Jackson ran across Tennessee Street to the area of of Virginia and Carolina Street between Macomb Street and Copeland Street.

They say Jackson exchanged gunfire with several officers. Police say Jackson was shot, then taken to the hospital where he died. 

Chief Michael DeLeo has placed the involved officers on administrative leave, pending the investigation.

TALLAHASSEE, FL (WTXL) - There has been shooting reported on the Florida State University Campus.

According to the alert that was sent out by the school, one suspect was shot at the fine arts building on Copeland Street. The alert also said that Tallahassee police have apprehended a second suspect. At this time there have been no other reported injuries.

School officials said that at this time there is no current threat to the campus or students.

Police have several areas of the campus blocked off with crime scene tape and they are currently advising people to state way from the area of Call Street and Copeland Street.

Tallahassee Police said that they were originally responding to an armed robbery at Gamble and Mills streets just before 1:30 p.m. The officers were chasing the suspects when one of the suspects was shot. At this time Tallahassee Police said it is unclear exactly what led up to the shooting.

The latest Update from the school was at 3:30 p.m.

The Tallahassee Police Department continues its investigation into an officer-involved shooting on the Florida State University campus.  At approximately 1:45PM, two criminal suspects were apprehended by TPD on campus near the Fine Arts Building, one being shot by law enforcement. No law enforcement or Florida State University personnel were harmed during the incident. 

All roadways and building entrances have been cleared.  

Barring any unforeseen developments, this will be the final update on this incident.  Any additional details will be released by the Tallahassee Police Department in due course.
