UPDATE: "The wildfire west of the Glen Lakes subdivision in Hernando County is now under control," says a Hernando Sheriff's Department report sent just before 7:30 p.m.

Their information comes from the Division of Forestry, who will now continue to monitor the area for hotspots and potential flare-ups.

Officials also report that the wildfire did not cause any "significant damages" or injuries, and that any residents who were evacuated from the area may now return back to their homes.

Residents can expect to see smoke in the area for several hours, and officials ask only for reports of "active fires" at this time.

ORIGINAL STORY:

WEEKI WACHEE, Fla. (WTSP) -- The Florida Forest Service is trying to get a handle on a 200-acre controlled burn that extended outside of its original fire lines and has now burned 550 acres.

Officials are currently at the scene near the Glen Lake subdivision, plowing some new fire lines to contain the flames. There are no mandatory evacuations or road closures at this point, and fire officials tell 10 News they do not believe any homes are threatened by the flames. Smoke could cause problems on US 19 later tonight.
