MIAMI (AP) - Miami police have started enforcing a teen curfew.

Spokesman Willie Moreno told The Miami Herald (http://hrld.us/ZEDw6k ) that the department started enforcing the existing county law Wednesday.

According to the Juvenile Curfew Ordinance, it is against the law for children younger than 17 to be out on their own in Miami-Dade County between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. from Sunday through Thursday. On Friday and Saturday, curfew hours are midnight until 6 a.m.

Moreno says students will soon be on spring break, and the curfew has been periodically enforced over the years when kids are out of school. He insisted the curfew was not in response to a recent series of shootings in the city.

Exceptions to the curfew include minors going to work, school, church and similar activities.
