TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -- A federal judge has ruled that the pills a Tampa man gave his girlfriend is what caused her to miscarry.
U.S. District Judge Richard A. Lazzara made the ruling today after two days of testimony.
Sentencing for John Andrew Welden was originally scheduled for December but Lazzara delayed the sentencing due to concerns over whether the pills caused the miscarriage.
Welden is accused of tampering with a consumer product and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
Prosecutors say Welden forged a signature last year on a prescription for a pill used to induce labor.
He relabeled a pill bottle as "amoxicillin" and told his then-girlfriend to take the pills.
Welden admitted to forging his father's signature. His father is a Tampa-area obstetrician.
His sentencing is scheduled for January 27.
