TALLAHASSEE, Fla. - Florida A&M University's (FAMU) Essential Theatre is raising $100,000 to endow a scholarship for the program.

Ronald O. Davis, Ph.D., former theater director and professor emeritus, is leading the charge. He is a firm supporter and believer in the Essential Theatre's central role in producing the next generation of theater artists.

"Many of the students that provide entertainment for us are struggling financially to stay in school and I want to do something about that," Davis said.  "I am equally interested in helping the FAMU theater program be in a position to recruit talented students who may choose to go elsewhere because another program can afford to offer a larger scholarship."

For these reasons, Davis has set out to produce a scholarship fundraiser that will feature two performances of "Jazz Interpretations" by the Michael Jefry Stevens Trio featuring Brian "Breeze" Cayolle.

"Jazz Interpretations," which will also include cameo appearances from Essential Theatre students and alumni, will take place Saturday, Jan. 25 and Sunday, Jan. 26 at 4 p.m. at the Charles Winter Wood Theatre/Edmonds Stage.

"You're going to get a great concert," said Davis, "but perhaps the greatest benefit you will receive is knowing you are helping to ensure that through scholarship offers, talented theatre students are able to choose Florida A&M University to get a first- rate education."

Tickets are $50 for admission to the concert. A $100 ticket purchase provides access to the performance and a Mardi Gras themed reception at 3 p.m. in the FAMU Meek - Eaton Black Archives. The reception will be followed by a New Orleans-style promenade into the theater just before the concert.

To purchase tickets on campus, visit the Essential Theatre box office, located in the lobby of Tucker Hall. The box office opens Jan. 24 from noon until 5:30 p.m., and 90 minutes prior to each performance.
