TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Civilian employees at MacDill Air Force Base will begin taking unpaid days off as part of a Department of Defense program to cut costs.
The Tampa Tribune (http://bit.ly/12cXSak ) reports about 3,500 civilian employees will be required to take 11 furlough days between Monday and the end September.
The federal government estimates MacDill employees will lose $8 million collectively in wages.
Civilian employees were slated to take 22 days without pay when the furloughs were first proposed, but that number was later cut in half.
In a statement, MacDill base commander Col. Scott DeThomas said the lost wages will add stress to the lives of the employees and their families.
