TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WTXL) - Former Florida Governor Charlie Crist is now opening up about his big party switch.

Crist was Governor from 2007 to 2011 as a Republican.

But in 2010, he ran for an open U.S. Senate seat as an Independent, losing to Republican Senator Marco Rubio.

Then in December 2012, Crist announced he had become a registered Democrat.

Crist is now battling incumbent Republican Governor Rick Scott for his old job back in a high-profile race that has drawn considerable national attention.

Crist  talked about the switch in an interview with CNN's "Piers Morgan Live."

It's been much better than I ever imagined it could be. Both Carol, my wife and I have both changed to the Democratic Party. She did it a year before me," said Crist.  "The welcoming we have received Piers from Democrats all across Florida has been remarkable."

Crist says that both he and his wife are grateful for all of the support they have received.  He even talks about the call he got from another former Florida Governor, Bob Graham.

One of the first calls I got as a matter of fact when I switched and became a Democrat was from former Governor Bob Graham of Florida, wonderful man, just a revered figure in our state, he said.  "The notion that he would take the time to get on the phone and call and say welcome to my party meant a great deal to me and it meant a great deal to Carol. So it's been wonderful, it really has."

Crist is leading in the polls, currently beating Scott 47 percent to 40 percent.
