VENICE - A Venice man may have gotten away with attempted murder 7 years ago, until he told someone about it last year.

36-year-old Jason Shahan faced charges in 2005 for trying to kill his family by setting their home on fire. The case never went to trial and prosecutors dropped the charges, but last year police arrested Shahan on battery charges in Lee County.

Investigators say that while he was in jail, he admitted trying to burn his family to death.

This week, the Sarasota County State Attorney's Office re-filed the attempted murder charges.
