VENICE, Fla. - Authorities have successfully located a man that wandered away from a Venice assisted living facility, thanks to an electronic tracking system designed for such a situation.

50-year-old James Mondello had left the Banyan House on Base Avenue East near the Venice Airport on foot Tuesday night.   Mondello suffers from brain injury due to car crash and does not respond to his name.

Thankfully he is a participant in Project Lifesaver, in which at-risk adults wear a small transponder that can help authorities locate them.

Wednesday morning, a search team set out to find Mr. Mondello and were led to the area around Caspersen Beach.  He was located along the west side of the Intracoastal Waterway a half mile south of Caspersen Beach, out of sight, laying deep within the roots of the mangroves, and along the water’s edge. Mr. Mondello was exhausted and totally concealed.

He was safely loaded onto a Venice Police boat and taken to the hospital to get checked out.
