CHARLOTTE COUNTY, FL. - Charlotte County Sheriff's detectives of the Economic Crimes Unit are asking the public for help in identifying two men who put a skimmer on a Publix ATM machine and were able to withdraw cash from victim’s accounts.
ECU detectives were notified that two Hispanic males were seen on surveillance video Jan. 18 at Publix, 4286 Tamiami Trail in Charlotte Harbor; one put a skimmer device on the ATM at 7:18 a.m. At 7:24 a.m. that same subject made a fraudulent transaction for $200.
The first subject was wearing “skinny jeans,” sneakers, and a dark jacket. He placed the skimming device over the ATM credit card slot that was able to read all cards inserted into the ATM. The second man wearing light colored blue jeans, a blue jacket with large white stripes down both sleeves and a ball cap, was acting as the lookout for the other man.
At 9:04 a.m. the second subject removed the skimmer while the other man was the lookout. Bank card holders had used the machine during the time period and their credit/debit cards were compromised. One woman reported her bank account had been charged twice for over $800.
ECU detectives are working with North Port Police as the same skimming device may have been used in that Sarasota County city. If anyone has information on the identity of these two ATM thieves, please call the CCSO Economic Crimes Unit at 941-639-2101, or Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
Or, for those who believe their bank account information was compromised by using the Publix ATM machine in Charlotte County during that time period, please call CCSO at 941-639-2101 to make a report so detectives can respond.
