NORTH PORT – Friday is National POW/MIA Recognition Day, and there was a small gathering in North Port for those who have not made it home.
AM/VETS Post 312 hosts the symbolic service. It involves a place setting at an empty table. From a single red rose to symbolize the blood many have shed in sacrifice, to the candle symbolizing hope to illuminate the way home.
It a remembrance for them and for the families who lost loved ones. “If they were missing in action you never had closure on their death. It's important to remember all those who gave their lives so that we have the freedom we have today," said Robert Anttila.
The ceremony is held annually on the 3rd Friday of September.
