SARASOTA COUNTY, FL (WWSB) - The latest report from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission shows a "patchy" but persistent bloom of the Florida red tide Organism, Karenia brevis, in waters around Sarasota County.
According to FWC, K. brevis was observed at background to high concentrations in 24 samples collected from Sarasota County. In Charlotte County Low to high concentrations were seen in seven samples collected, while Lee County had background to high concentrations in 32 samples collected.
Additional samples collected throughout Florida, including Manatee County, did not contain K. brevis.
Officials say fish kills have been reported in Sarasota County at Casey Key, Manasota Beach, Nokomis Beach, Venice Beach, and Venice North Jetty.
Respiratory irritation was also reported over the past week in Sarasota County at Lido Key, Manasota Beach, Nokomis and Venice Beach.
