VENICE, Fla. - Police say a woman died after she was thrown from a boat in the Intracoastal Waterway this weekend.

It happened Sunday just before 7pm behind Venice High School. Police say a 37-year-old Venice resident, John Antolak was driving a boat when it suddenly veered into the rocks along the banks of the waterway.

41-year-old Alicia Starkweather was thrown overboard. She was flown to Blake Medical Center in Bradenton, where she later died.

Antolak told investigators the boat swerved off course after hitting a manatee, but during questioning, police say he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

An investigation is underway and police say alcohol is believed to have played a role in the crash.

Please keep us updated on this accident as I think this was my friends daughter as she was involved in a boating accident Sunday evening in that area. But I'm sorry to report she did not make it. She passed away this morning. I think she was around 40 years old. I'm thankful I got to see her recently when she visited us in Cocoa Beach with her mother who has been battling cancer for sometime now. I pray for her family and know she is with our Lord.
