NORTH PORT - The city of North Port has two new commissioners and a mayor.

This morning Cheryl Cook and Rhonda DiFranco were sworn in.

The city commission then voted on a new mayor from within. Linda Yates was given the nod in a 3-2 vote over Tom Jones. It is the first time the city has had a mayor in more than 20 years.

Before voters approved the measure last week, North Port was one of only five cities in the state which did not have mayor title.

"I think any of our commissioners that are elected and put up there on the dais can serve this community in that role. For me, it is definitely an honor to be selected by the majority to take on that leadership role," says Mayor Yates.

Jim Blucher was also selected as vice mayor.
