CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. - A DeSoto County man with drugs in his pockets was arrested early Monday morning after deputies say he was sleeping at the wheel of a car that was stopped on a rural highway.

40-year-old Derek Conrad of Arcadia has been charged with Possession of Methamphetamine with the Intent to Distribute, Possession of Methadone and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia.  He has been released on bond.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, around 1am Monday, a deputy responded to a report of a vehicle parked on State Road 31 just south of Bermont Road.

Upon arrival, the deputy found Conrad in a car sitting in the southbound lane with its brake light on.  The deputy says Conrad did not appear intoxicated, but was "not able to say where he was coming from."

A consented search of his clothing revealed a bag in his front pants pocket that contained multiple other clear plastic baggies. One baggy had five small white pills that were found to be methadone. There were also five separate baggies that contained a total of 8.5 grams of a substance that tested positive for crystal methamphetamine.
