SARASOTA COUNTY - A Venice man was arrested Thursday for a stabbing incident in which he claims he was protecting his brother.

Shortly after midnight Saturday night, deputies were called to a party of about 40-50 people in the 500 block of Sarabay Road in Osprey, the second police response at the party that night.

Arriving deputies observed a car leaving the scene and stopped the car quickly.  The victim, 22-year-old Paul Damiano, was found in the car, bleeding from the lower back.  He was flown to Blake Medical Center for treatment, where staff there advised the injury was very close to being life-threatening.

Damiano and several witnesses at the party told deputies that he was in an altercation with Jake McCauley and his brother Jesse McCauley when Jake stabbed him.

After speaking with Jake McCauley on Thursday, detectives arrested him and charged him with Aggravated Battery with a Deadly Weapon without Intent to Kill.
