PUNTA GORDA, Fla. - Authorities are investigating a possibly self-inflicted death of a Port Charlotte man inside the Charlotte County jail Wednesday.

According to the Charlotte County Sheriff's Office, communications operators received a call from the jail at about 3:37pm that an inmate had suffered self-inflicted injuries in one of the housing pods.  Jail Medical personnel rushed to the pod in question while the ambulance was enroute, but the inmate was already deceased.

The pod was immediately locked down after the incident. The Major Crimes detectives and the Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene to handle the investigation.

The inmate, 56-year-old Victor Akers, was arrested on May 21 on charges of Misdemeanor Battery and Violation of Probation.
