PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - A Suncoast family is dealing with tragedy after a 7-year-old boy was fatally run over in the driveway of a home Tuesday evening.

It happened around 5:15pm in a driveway along Ackerman Avenue.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, a Hyundai Sonata driven by Terrance Hunter of Cambridge, Ontario was in a garage and began slowly backing out and turning with the curve of the driveway.

That's when troopers say 7-year-old Ethan Estrada of Port Charlotte was somewhere behind the car and was struck by it, and then rolled over by the car's left front tire.

The driver immediately stopped.

Estrada was taken to Peace River Regional Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Estrada is the son of a Charlotte County Deputy.

“No parent should have to endure the loss of a child. Our condolences go out to Kevin and Melissa. Their loss is a loss to our entire Sheriff’s Office family,” said Sheriff Bill Prummell in a press release Wednesday.

No charges have been filed.
