CHARLOTTE COUNTY - A Punta Gorda man died Monday afternoon in the Charlotte Harbor area after riding into the path of a vehicle on U.S. 41, troopers say.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, 53-year-old Christopher Weems was riding his bicycle northbound on U.S. 41 approaching Main Street just before 5pm Monday.

That's when troopers say he started to turn left onto Main Street, directly into the path a vehicle headed southbound on U.S. 41.

The vehicle struck Weems and knocked him off the bicycle and onto the pavement.  He was not wearing a helmet.

He was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel.

No charges have been filed at this time.
