Englewood, FL-The Charlotte County Sheriff’s Office responded to two different houses in the Gulf Cove area of Englewood on Monday where someone had removed the hurricane shutters from the windows in order to break into the houses.

Deputies were originally dispatched to a house off Keystone Blvd. when maintenance personnel found that hurricane shutters that had previously been in place were laying on the ground.  The window had been broken out to allow someone to enter the residence.  The home owner was out of town at the time of the report but was able to advise deputies over the phone of property that was missing.

While deputies investigating the first burglary were conducting a neighborhood canvas for possible witnesses, they located a second home that had been broken into in a similar manner.  That home owner was also not home at the time.

Similar break-ins where hurricane shutters have been removed to gain access to windows have been reported recently in other areas of the county.  The investigation into these burglaries is continuing.

Sheriff Bill Prummell would like to remind everyone that if they see something disturbed at their neighbor’s houses when the neighbors are away, law enforcement may need to investigate.

“When people go away, they often put up their hurricane shutters to deter break-ins,” Sheriff Prummell said.  “If you see that your neighbor’s shutters have been removed and they haven’t returned home, please call the Sheriff’s Office.”

Anyone with information about the Gulf Cove burglaries, or any other crimes is asked to please call the Sheriff’s Office at (941) 639-2101, or Crime Stoppers at 800-780-TIPS (8477).
