PUNTA GORDA - An elderly couple is found dead in their home after crews respond to a house fire in Punta Gorda.

On Thursday around 11:15 a.m., the Punta Gorda Police and Fire Departments responded to 310 Sorrento Court for the report of a fire.

85-year-old John Fitzmaruice Jr. and 79-year-old Carole Fitzmaruice were discovered deceased in the master bedroom and master bathroom.

Punta Gorda Police Detectives are investigating the deaths in cooperation with the State Fire Marshal’s Office and the Charlotte County Medical Examiner’s Office. Due to physical evidence at the scene, investigators determined that the fire which started in the living room, was accidental and most likely caused by faulty electrical wiring.

The Charlotte County Medical Examiner’s Office will be making an official ruling related to the cause of death, but investigators believe the deaths are accidental.
